What are Concussions?
Concussions, also known as a mild traumatic brain injury, are a common injury in sports that come from a result of a bump, blow, or a jolt to the head, neck, or body. These external forces transmit to the brain which can cause symptoms such as dizziness, difficulty concentrating, confusion, balance issues and headaches. Concussions are
especially common in young athletes ages 5-18 and in the US alone, experts estimate 1-3 million people visit the ER each year with concussion like symptoms.

How can Chiropractors help?
Chiropractic care can play a supportive role in concussion management by focusing on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems.
1. Cervical Spine Care
After a concussion, the neck and upper back often suffer trauma, especially if the
concussion is the result of a fall or collision (common in sports). Chiropractors can assess and treat dysfunctions in the cervical spine (neck area), which can help reduce symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and neck pain.
2. Vestibular and Balance Rehab
Many chiropractors can provide balance and vestibular rehabilitation exercises. This is
particularly important for individuals experiencing dizziness or balance problems after a concussion. These exercises help retrain the brain to manage coordination and
balance.
3. Lifestyle and Education
Chiropractic care may include guidance on lifestyle modifications and rehabilitation
exercises to help patients gradually return to their daily activities and sports without
exacerbating symptoms. Exercises aimed at improving neck strength, posture, and
proprioception can be helpful in concussion recovery.
4. Collaboration
Chiropractors often work as part of a broader healthcare team, coordinating with
physicians, neurologists, physical therapists, and other professionals to ensure
comprehensive care. For concussion management, they may refer patients for imaging studies or collaborate in a multidisciplinary approach.
5. Return to Play
For athletes or active individuals, safely returning to physical activities after a
concussion is crucial. Chiropractors can guide patients through a gradual and monitored
return-to. activity plan, ensuring that the body is functioning optimally and that they don’t return to strenuous activity too soon, which could risk re-injury.
